Atlantic Plastic Recycling introduces new website
IN SOUTH AFRICA’S dynamic plastics recycling industry, Atlantic Plastic Recycling (APR) stands as a testament to ongoing commitment and strategic evolution. What began in 1989 as a family-owned scrap metal trading company has since transformed into a significant player in plastics collection and recycling. APR’s longevity highlights a business foundation built on robust customer relationships, continuous technological investment, and a dedication to innovation and quality.
APR’s strategic reinvestment programme is their proactive approach to meeting the growing demand for recycled polymers. The first phase, completed in late 2022, saw the essential acquisition of an Intarema RegrindPro 1108TVE Plus extruder to boost the production capacity of recycled high density polyethylene (HDPE) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) by over 200 tonnes per month.
Building on this foundation of growth, Phase 2, implemented this year, saw the successful installation of a new state-of-the-art wash plant facility to significantly increase APR’s material washing capability by an additional 250 tonnes per month. The company’s forward-looking vision extends to Phase 3 of its expansion strategy, planned for 2026 and 2027, to solidify APR’s position as one of South Africa’s largest producers of high-quality recycled plastic polymer, with a focus on materials suitable for direct virgin polymer replacement.
To further reinforce its dedication to quality, APR is in the process of implementing ISO9001 across all its operations.
As part of this strategic evolution and to showcase its expanded capabilities, APR is proud to launch its new branding and revamped website, introducing APR’s three new polymer brands, each tailored for specific industry needs:
• APR Horizon (HDPE): HDPE pellets, suitable for quality-critical market applications as virgin polymer replacement;
• APR Legacy (LDPE): LDPE recycled polymer optimised for customer quality and film extrusion performance;
• APR Legend (LLDPE): a newly developed APR polymer recipe is specifically designed for the pallet wrap market, suitable for multi-layer extrusion on high-speed extruders capable of running recycled content.

The need for plastics recycling in South Africa is more pronounced than ever. APR is a proud member of the South African Plastics Pact and the company’s ongoing investments to grow production capacity are a direct contribution to this national objective. Their recycling growth facilitates waste reduction, resource conservation, and the move towards a circular economy, ultimately assisting brand owners in meeting the legislated Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) targets.
Beyond the recycled polymers, APR further supports the circular economy through its’ affiliated business, Atlantic Plastic Bags, which buys and sells a range of previously used woven polypropylene bags to a wide range of industries. Details on the product range can be found on the newly launched website.
As a founding member of the South African Plastics Recycling Organisation (SAPRO), together with its strategic investment, technological advancement, and a clear vision for a future of growth, APR continues to reinforce its position as a key plastics recycler and plays an active role in shaping the industry’s future.
