20 years strong: Shaping Africa’s packaging future

THIS is not just the story of a company and its products; it’s a story of resilience, passion, and an unshakable drive to keep moving forward. It’s about a team that has faced challenges that could have ended it all, yet rose stronger every time. It’s about redefining what’s possible in packaging by turning setbacks into breakthroughs and delivering innovation that shapes industries.

From humble beginnings in 2005, Taigan has grown into one of South Africa’s most trusted leaders in cast stretch film and packaging solutions. Founded by Peter and Ethel McCullough, with over 45 years of industry expertise, the company was built on three core principles: quality, efficiency, and sustainability. These values remain the foundation of everything Taigan does today.

By 2014, the company was thriving until June, when disaster struck. A fire wiped out everything a product-driven business depends on: the entire factory, all machinery, stock, computers, records, and essential files. Years of work, gone in a matter of hours. All that remained were their cellphones, Peter and Ethel’s home, and the unshakable drive of the Taigan team. Operating out of their home, they refused to let adversity define them. Not a single client was let down. This “phoenix moment” became a defining chapter in Taigan’s story, proof that resilience is woven into the company’s DNA.

Innovation quickly followed. In 2017, Taigan made history by launching the first-of-its-kind 33-layer stretch film, T.nano 33, into the South African market. This was one of the thinnest films available, enhancing the safety of goods in transit, a breakthrough in both performance and sustainability.

In 2019, the company raised the bar again with a 55-layer Nano Stretch film and introduced folded-edge technology, making film edges far more resistant to tearing and further improving load stabilisation. These advancements were designed with Africa in mind, built to withstand the continent’s toughest transport routes, diverse industries, and challenging climates.

Taigan’s commitment to sustainability became formalised with the launch of Greenfluence, embedding measurable environmental benefits into every process. Initiatives like the Core Swop Recycling Programme, which reuse green cores, reduce plastic waste and promote a circular economy. This commitment also extends to the recycling of EPDM and other materials, ensuring that end-of-life products are responsibly processed and reintroduced into the value chain rather than ending up in landfills.

The company’s offering extends beyond film. The dedicated Machine Division supplies semi-automatic pallet wrapping machines, provides on-site operator training, and delivers rapid technical support to optimise performance, reduce costs, and minimise waste. This division has expanded to service and maintain all types of wrapping equipment from pallet wrappers to strapping machines, giving customers a single, trusted partner for both film and machinery performance.

Technology is now central to Taigan’s approach. By using data-driven insights from customer operations, the company ensures every role performs at its best, delivering measurable savings, improving efficiency, and reducing environmental impact.

Now, in its 20th year, Taigan proudly unveils T.Nano Shesha, the next evolution in packaging engineered for Africa. Designed to conquer the continent’s harshest climates, longest routes, and most demanding industries, Shesha is even thinner, stronger, and more sustainable than anything before it. Delivering maximum load security with minimal material, it is the ultimate expression of the “Less is Best” philosophy, empowering businesses to achieve world-class efficiency, uncompromising safety, and genuine environmental responsibility.

As Taigan celebrates two decades, the journey from humble beginnings, through disaster, to market leadership is proof of what vision, resilience, and relentless innovation can achieve. For the Taigan team, the first 20 years were only the beginning. The next chapter promises to be even smarter, greener, and stronger, built for Africa, ready for the world.
