Karob Plastics celebrates 20 years

IN 2005, with just one blow moulding machine and a bold vision, Patrick McIlwaine laid the foundation for what would become one of South Africa’s most trusted names in plastic container manufacturing: Karob Plastics. From these humble beginnings in Stormill, Roodepoort, Karob has grown into a thriving, ISO 9001-certified operation—now home to several blow moulding and injection moulding machines and a team driven by quality, reliability, and a relentless focus on customer service.

“When I started Karob, I wanted to build a company that delivered a solid product, treated people well, and never overpromised. We stuck to that—and the growth followed,” said founder Patrick McIlwaine.

Today, the legacy continues under the leadership of Patrick’s sons, Sean McIlwaine and Andrew McIlwaine-Wright, who have infused the business with fresh energy while holding firm to the values that built it: durability, service excellence, and innovation.

“Karob’s strength lies in its people—our team, our suppliers, and especially our customers. This business was built on relationships, and that’s how we plan to grow it,” said director Sean McIlwaine.

Specialising in the manufacture of plastic containers ranging from 1-litre to 25-litre capacity, Karob serves a broad spectrum of industries, including agriculture, food and beverage, automotive, and industrial cleaning chemicals. The company’s versatile range of UN-certified containers is trusted by businesses that demand packaging performance and consistency.

Karob’s exceptional team is the heartbeat of the company, delivering not only top-quality products but also personalised, responsive service that clients have come to rely on. Customer service isn’t just a department at Karob—it’s a priority baked into every process.

Even during South Africa’s ongoing power challenges, Karob maintains uninterrupted production, thanks to a rooftop solar installation featuring over 700 solar panels. This commitment to sustainable operations ensures 24/7 manufacturing capability—minimising downtime and meeting delivery commitments, no matter the circumstances.

As Karob Plastics celebrates its 20th anniversary, the company remains proud of its roots, excited about its future, and grateful to the customers and partners who have supported the journey. What began as one man and one machine is now a thriving family-run enterprise, built to last.
