Jochem is putting years of experience in equipment supply to good use in the welding area. The Swiss Sonic welding unit is a compact system where, in this installation at a Cape convertor, the parts to be joined enter and exit by conveyor, which process is automated and achieves a high level of repeatability with close to zero defects.

Jochem Greiner returns to ultrasonics

JOCHEM GREINER of Greiner Trading of Cape Town is back in the sphere he’s most interested in: ultrasonics, the business of welding, punching, riveting or cutting thermoplastics. His company represents Swiss Sonic, a leading world manufacturer of plastics welding systems and technology developer based in Switzerland.

After getting involved in the industry when he joined his father at machinery supplier Hestico Cape, Jochem spent a decade in equipment supply and discovered an interest in ultrasonic welding. He ventured on his own in 2006 when he started Greiner Trading, operating out of Montague Gardens in Cape Town. Jochem’s main business was the supply of specialised shrink films through Germac Trading, which supplied a range of imported polyolefin (POF) shrink films.

Despite operating from the same building, Germac Trading is a separate company, acquired the same year that Greiner Trading was established, with different shareholdings. The sale of that business to Baypac Solutions last year has allowed Jochem to go back to the business of joining plastics efficiently.

While Jochem gained the agency for Swiss Sonic when starting on his own in 2006, the POF films activity at Germac Trading did not allow him to devote enough time to welding projects.

This has now changed. Swiss Sonic supplies equipment for welding, riveting, or cutting thermoplastics as part of the welding objectives. Jochem first gained experience in welding with Rinco Ultrasonics while at Hestico, which represented the welding equipment manufacturer. Components and fittings from Rinco and Swiss Sonic are interchangeable.

Together with M&G Tech in Cape Town, Greiner Trading does retrofitting of Ultra Sonics onto special application machines. With this collaboration they can offer repairs to all makes of Ultra Sonic machinery and can also manufacture custom made horns for 15; 20, and 35kHz applications.

“As ultrasonic presses of all brands in South Africa are getting quite old, spare parts can sometimes become obsolete. They can fit and integrate Swiss Sonic Generators into these machines and bring them back to life at a fraction of the price of a new press,“ explained Jochem.
